Were any enlightenment philosophers lawyers by profession?

This is not a homework ignment. I'm just interested in theory vs. practice. Many enlightenment philosophers - Mills, Locke, Rosseau, Hobbes, Jerfferson, etc., were concerned about the 'rights of (hu)man.' Did any of them actually PRACTICE law (I know the concept of 'lawyer' might have been different then) and have experience in dealing directly with what we'd probably call human rights issues?
