Xampp 1.7.2 help needed?

I recently installed xammp 1.7.2 on windows xp and installation seems to get completed sucessfully but when i try to check on hhtp://localhost or a href="http://127.0.0.1" rel="nofollow"http://127.0.0.1/a i get the page cannot be displayed error on IE as well as Firefox.I thought this problem might be due to my IIS engaging the port 80 but even after i have completely removed IIS i still have the same problem.I also tried on Ubuntu 8.01 on vmware i get a sucessfull installation but i have the same page not found error on my browser.Can somebody please help?
