Legal firearm protection quest.?

i own a shotgun + i'm a strong believer in the 2nd ammendment + i thank god for it everyday. if someone enters my home + i shoot them, what happens to me? + if they harm me or my family? what should i go by before i shoot them so i dont get in trouble b/c i heard stories of home owners that shot intruders + got in trouble for it?
