I know we have a problem I just don't know if I have any legal remidies. ?

My daughter allowed an old friend to come and stay with her while she got back on her feet. They agreed she would pay x amount of dollars and pay back my daughter for necessities she provided while the friend looked for work. The friend free loaded for 3 months and then made plans to bolt this coming fri to a mans home she didn't even know. My daughter had told her she could not continue living with her if she kept meeting strangers online as she has a daughter to protect. Any way when my daughter confirmed that the friend in fact was going to take off with out paying the remainder of the monies she packed her clothes for her and got her a room for the night at a local hotel left a letter for her at her work with cab fair and the motel name and told her she could pick up the remainder of her property when she had her money. The police say it is theft if she does not turn it over and added that my daughter has to allow this man into her home to collect the property for the friend.As well when my daughter was hesitant to buy the friend her third carton of smokes the friend handed her a valuable camera and said keep it till I pay you back I witnessed it and brought the camera home and this is were it has been since. I can't find any help online for a situation like this ANYONE PLZ ADVISE We are in Alberta Canada
